Wild Reindeer of Novaya Zemlya Archipelago
According to different data sources, the reindeer population of Novaya Zemlya has a dramatic history. Hunted to the extinction at the beginning of the 20th century it was re-established by the end of that century. But a regime of strict closure of the Archipelago has not permitted studies of reindeer in the wild for many years. The uncertain situation with this reindeer subspecies must be resolved and current status clarified. The problems, facts and prospects for conservation of reindeer on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago are identified and discussed on the basis of a literature review.
